Assessing Your School
Although the previous sections may already have your mind swimming with ideas for change, before beginning to work to implement these ideas it is vital to become mindful of all of the areas in need of change. Some readers may be reading this book individually, while others may be reading it as a teachersâ cohort, an entire school staff, an all-district mandate, or an entire city or state collective. Whatever your individual experience, you may wish to seek out a trusted colleague or suggest working together as a small group to assess your school, both so that there are a variety of opinions weighing in and so that there is already a contingent in place to begin the change process once the needs for change are fully recognized.
It can be easy to want to go back in time as far as possible when con-sidering ways in which your school could improve upon its inclusion practices. However, this can result in significant frustration of wishing things would have been done differently when the focus now should be what can be done differently today and what can be set up so that situations occur differently moving forward. With this in mind, decide to consider the past one or two years and do not become distracted by what has occurred in the school before then, unless thereâs been a specific incident in your individual school or school districtâs history. It is likely that your school has not changed its ways significantly in the past one or two years, so this allows for the consideration of continuity rather than focusing on something that may have occurred only once for a specific need for that school year.
